There are two types of mechanics that you will commonly see in characters with mechanic parts. Cybernetics and biomechatronics. Believe it or not, there actually is a difference.
Biomechatronics
In essence, biomechatronics are just the mechanical versions of body parts. They are engineered to have the same purpose as the part that they are replacing, and many, if not most biomechatronic parts have the same structure as the part as well. For example, a biomechatronic leg is likely to have the same anatomy as a real leg, with the exception of being mechanical. Biomechatronics seek to meld biology and technology, making them work together in harmony as well as possible.
Cybernetics
Cybentic parts are controlled by the nervous system. According to Google the definition of cybernetic is:
the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things.
Thus we can conclude that the purpose of cybernetics is not the same as the purpose of biomechatronics. It focuses on communication and control, rather than reaching a point where the human body can essentially be harmonized with mechanical means.
Cybernetic mechanical parts are not really a part of the body like biomechatronics. Instead, they are typically used to enhance an individual, rather than replace a part of the body.
So if you want to determine whether or not a character is a cybernetic cyborg or a biomechatronic one, just remember that cybernetics are in addition to the existing body and biomechatronics are a replacement for a part of the existing body.
