Book Review: The Legend of Greg, An Epic Series of Failures: Book 1

The Legend of Greg (An Epic Series of Failures): Rylander, Chris ...

Overview

The Legend of Greg is about a boy named Greg (obviously) and his adventures. Greg finds out one day after drinking some magical tea that he is actually a Dwarf, and that Dwarves have been secretly dwelling among humans for years. Likewise, it turns out that his best friend is actually an Elf, and the Elves and Dwarves ancient feud is the reason that magic disappeared a long, long time ago.

What I Liked

  • The variety of weapons used by the characters.
  • How they realize that some people are bad, and some are good, and you cannot judge somone by their race.
  • Greg is clearly a flawed person.
  • The chapter titles.

What I Didn't Like

  • The fact that Greg and his best friend have a falling out.
  • Glamenhilda seems kind of stereotypical as a character.

Conclusion

I really liked this book despite Glamenhilda, and Greg's falling out with his best friend. It's certainly an interesting concept: a hero doomed to fail, fated to take up a powerful weapon that will be his ultimate downfall. And Greg is clearly a flawed protagonist, making mistakes throughout the book that set up the closing scenes. I look forward to reading books 2 and 3.

Audience

Middle school and up.

Content Warning

Violence that is mildly graphic.
Off screen deaths.
The Elves and Dwarves use racial slurs to refer to each other.
