Book Review: Gregor the Overlander

Overview

Gregor's father was been missing for about 2 years. It impacted him and his mother drastically, and now he is spending his summer taking care of his baby sister and grandmother while his other sister is at summer camp. Then, when he is washing the laundry he falls down into the Underland with his baby sister.

What I Liked

  • The realistic portrayals of the characters.
  • The poetry that made up The Prophecy of Gray was very beautiful.
  • The way that the Underlanders speak differently than Overlanders.

What I Didn't Like

  • When one spider ate another one.
  • The betrayal.

Conclusion

It's a really good book. I'm reading the series a second time, and it's just as good as the first time. (Which was unfortunately not true for Magnus Chase...) The world is vibrant, the characters feel real, and the plot is solidly woven.

Audience

Middle school and up.

Content Warnings

War.
Death.
Semi-graphic violence.
Cannibalism (off-screen, one spider eats another).
